Normally takes place at the main, 10am, Sung Mass on a Sunday morning when the whole Christian community is gathered and can welcome the newly baptised as well as offer up prayers for them. Parents are encouraged to attend the Sung Mass before the baptism to help them appreciate the significance of their child baptism and to prepare them for the promises and declarations that they will make.

Each person enquiring about baptism is given an explanatory leaflet with their application form and will receive a visit from either the Vicar or another trained person to help them understand the Baptism service and the symbolism that surrounds the sacrament of Baptism.

Help and guidance will also be given about the choice of godparents. These must be chosen with care and they, like the parents, are required to make solemn and specific promises and declaration. All godparents must be baptised.

Parents with children under five are also invited to join the Edward Bear Club which meets regularly in the Church. Full details can be found here.

Please note that there is no fee for this service.

What is Baptism?

Baptism is the rite of initiation for Christians. It is only through Baptism that a person becomes a Christian.

It has become the custom for most people to be baptised as babies or small children although baptism can be administered at any age and in fact, you are never too old to think about being baptised! However for adults it is good practice for them to receive the sacrament of Confirmation at the same time and this will affect the preparation time and the influence the date on which the baptism can take place.

The sacrament of Baptism involves the use of water, which is poured over the head of the person being baptised as a sign of the washing away of their sins and a symbol of their resurrection to a new life in Christ. In addition the newly baptised will receive a candle and be anointed with Holy Oil.

Service of Thanksgiving

Not everyone is ready to have their child baptised or would rather wait until the child is older.

A popular alternative is to have a service of thanksgiving where the family meet in Church to give thanks to God for the safe arrival of a new baby.
